Gas Fireplace Cleaning and Maintenance Tips
Gas fireplaces need to be maintained regularly, at least once a year. Like wood burning fireplaces, gas fireplaces collect dirt and debris that can cause it to burn ineffectively, house unwanted pests, or even develop hazardous leaks.
There are many different types of gas fireplaces that can be cleaned in different ways. To help you out, here are some of the best gas fireplace cleaning and maintenance tips for all gas fireplaces.
Turn Off the Gas
Before you do anything to your fireplace, it’s important to turn off the gas for your safety. Otherwise it may ignite when you’re working on the fireplace.
Open and Remove Decor
Check with your owner’s manual to discover how the glass pane of your fireplace can be opened. Open it only when it is completely cool. Then, remove the lava stones or logs. Place them on an old towel or papers you don’t mind throwing out.
If you have gas logs, it is important that you do not rearrange them. Their specific layout is designed to achieve the best results from the fireplace.
Clean Lava Stones
If you have lava stones you can clean the with your vacuum attachment. First, cover the vacuum attachment with a cheesecloth, using a rubber band to secure it. Otherwise, small lava stones may be pulled up into the vacuum. Vacuum each stone individually.
Clean Fireplace Logs
Gas fireplace logs cannot be cleaned with a vacuum. Instead, find a soft cloth, wet it, and gently wipe down the logs. The more frequently you do this, the easier it will be to remove the grime. You can use a soft-bristled brush if some debris is stuck to the logs.
Clean the Gas Fireplace Unit
First, clean the base and sides of the fireplace with a vacuum. If anything is stuck on, you can use a mild detergent and soft sponge to clean it off. While you have the fireplace open, also clean the inside of the glass with a glass cleaner.
Once you’re done, dry the fireplace off with a towel thoroughly before you place the decorative items back in.
Clean the Glass
The last thing left to do is to clean the outside of the glass. Once that’s done, remember to turn the gas back on for the next time you want to enjoy your gas fireplace.
