All About Fireplace Screens

Do you have a gas fireplace?

Did you know that regulations came into effect on January 1, 2015 (it’s also applicable in the United States)?

Starting on January 1, 2015, all new gas fireplaces, and fireplace heaters that vent to the outside, will come with a protective barrier.  This barrier will be there to prevent your child and others from coming into direct contact with the glass front of the fireplace.”

So, if you purchased a new gas fireplace from Stamford Fireplaces manufactured after January 1, 2015, it would have come standard with the required screen already included.

Why are fireplace screens mandatory?

If you have young kids, you know how rambunctious and inquisitive they can be.

Mandatory fireplace screens protect kids (and pets too) should they touch the glass front of a gas fireplace.

Instead of coming in contact with a hot door, they’ll reach a cool, safe-to-the-touch screen which won’t burn their skin.

Types of fireplacesChoosing the right fireplace screen for you

As mentioned earlier in this blog, obligatory fireplace screens came into effect on January 1, 2015.

However, if you need to purchase a screen for your gas fireplace, here are some things to keep in mind when doing your research before you make a decision:

Style selection

You’ll want a fireplace screen to fit your home’s décor (you can always visit our design centre to find a look that’s right for you). Fireplace screens usually come in the following styles:

  • FLAT GUARD/SPARK GUARD: Gas units don’t spark like wood fireplaces. But these seamless screens protect against potential sparking by fitting against – and totally covering – the face of the firebox. In order to access the firebox, the screen must be removed and fully moved aside.

(Flat guard screens are ideal for homes with young kids and pets)

  • SCREENED DOORS: Screens with doors fit tightly against the firebox face. Usually, they have magnetic closures which prevent accidental opening. But once they’re opened, the firebox opening is exposed.

(Screened doors are ideal for homes with older children)

Tape measureMeasuring

There is no standard measurement for gas fireplace screens.

Ideally, if you provide us with your make and model number, we can help you choose the best screen for your fireplace.
